ZnO Dispersions
Five Star has created a number of submicron zinc oxide dispersions, using
conventional commercial grade starting materials. An example is shown in the
data table below.

The data illustrates Five Star’s ability to target narrow particle size
distributions. In the table, the particle size data for the starting material
is shown, with a mean agglomerate size of 16.7 microns and a D90 of over 51
microns. The table then lists particle size distributions for three Five Star
dispersions, showing the ability to move the particle size target and to tighten
the distribution. Means of 500, 310 and 270 nm are achieved, the latter with
a D10 to D90 range of 100-510 nm. Five Star thus enables the formulator of
multi-layer varistors to achieve thinner, more uniform layers and smaller devices
without the fear of interlayer failure due to oversized particles. Similar
results are achieved with other metal oxide fillers.
